Kash on Nutrition

The President and Congressional Republicans claim the economy is great. But 12 million children in America live in food insecure households. Those kids who don’t get enough to eat have additional problems at school. They are frequently tired and sluggish, and suffer from headaches, irritability, and fatigue which affects their ability to learn. We need to provide heathy and nutritious meals and also provide the opportunity to take meals home because there are countless cases where children only eat when they are at school.

Then there are elderly and disabled adults who have to choose between food and their medications due to limited employment opportunities and higher-than-average health care expenses.

This Administration has announced cuts in food assistance to 700,000 of America’s most vulnerable people. This is an outrage when one realizes America has food to export to the world, and our farmers have recently lost International markets do to this President’s trade war.

We need to increase the Department of Agriculture’s Federal Food Purchase Program, which allows the U.S. Department of Agriculture to purchase a variety of food products. Those products will support the National School Lunch Program, the Women, Infants and Children program, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program, and other Federal Feeding Programs.
